Topic: BARRY PILGRIMS 20th BIRTHDAY PARTY MAY 1954

Topic type:

Barry Pilgrim, an Australian contracted electrician celebrates his 20th Birthday May 1954.

Of those several Australian electricians contracted by FMR,  Barry was the loudest and friendliest and soon brought those diverse fellows to a cohesive group. Barry wanted to celebrate with a Birthday Party his emergence from his teenage years to his adulthood. To all the electrical shop he personally issued invitations to that Party which was to be held in his house in Onslow Street.

Remember it was 1954 and late closing for the pubs was just a dream. None the less I was surprised by the amount of crated beer held in a locked room. Barry had made sure his party was definitely not going to run out of beer.

But where was the “party spirit?” When I arrived the party was more like a funeral wake than a teenage party. We young men just held our beer glasses and stood around very quietly.

ENTER GEORGE MARKLAND and BOB PATTY

In pict HAKA1 Barry and his best friend “Dogs Breath” are shown in party mode.

In pict HAKA2 Barry is shown in strong party mode.

What Dogs Breath’s name actually was I never discovered. Wishing to talk to him meant I had to manoeuvre myself before him then say whatever it was. I was not about to insult him with the words Dogs Breath!
