Kawerau Intermediate, in conjunction with the Kawerau District Library, celebrated the nationwide launch of the Nestlé Write Around New Zealand: Nestlé Tuhi Amio Whenua 2004 creative writing competition by launching hundreds of paper planes into the air. To help fuel the imaginations of young writers, other Bay of Plenty public libraries also released planes across the region, but Kawerau rocked with the school releasing all theirs at the same time. The Mayor of Kawerau, Malcolm Campbell, challenged Kawerau Intermediate pupils to win "the pop idol competition of writing" and looked forward to seeing their results. He led the pupils in a mass countdown leading to the blast-off of planes across the auditorium. To finish, the Principal of Kawerau Intermediate, Max Galu, was presented with a box of Nestlé goodies to share with students and staff. This photo shows the pupils launching their completed airplanes.
