Topic: Good Friday Floods 2014

Topic type:

Kawerau experienced an overwhelming volume of rain creating surface flooding 17-18 April 2014 peaking on the afternoon of Good Friday.

Once the rain stopped, the water drained quickly around town. Kawerau Mayor Malcolm Campbell said he gave full marks to council staff and emergency services who responded to Kawerau's flooding. Issues the Council were contacted about included the storm water system and fallen tree branches from the wind, which often blocked drainage and contributed to flooding. Council were also aware of a couple of garages flooding and one property with water in the basement. The fire brigade also received around 10 callouts for weather related issues during the storm and most of these were to do with flooding.
