Topic: BEST 1st YEAR BABY XMAS 1958

Topic type:

In 1957 a fun competition was held in Kawerau to find the Best 1st Year Baby. Pauline Thomas was surprised to find that Christine her daughter was awarded that honour.

BEST 1st YEAR BABY 1957 by Harold Thomas          Pauline and Christine shown here with Tasman House in the left background.

We, Harold and Pauline Thomas, lived in Vogel St and when shopping in the Kawerau shopping centre we saw this Best 1st Year Baby Competition (Xmas 1958) in progress. We entered our 10month old daughter Christine as we thought she was a fabulous baby, a very good feeder, a good sleeper, quiet, tranquil and could amuse herself with her toys when left alone. But not left alone too long otherwise she soon made herself known with loud noises.

Born in the Maternity Annexe in Waterhouse Street, weighing 8lbs 8ozs, chubby with beautiful skin even Dr Lippa exclaimed: "...a bootiful baby....a bootiful baby...".

We did not win the competition as an even more chubbier baby won the Prize.
