Memories from the Bay of Plenty Earthquake 2 March 1987 written by Richard McDonald (20.03.07) for the 20th Anniversary Earthquake Memories Project (Sir James Fletcher Kawerau Museum).

Earthquake Memories - Richard McDonald - Tasman Mill Site

Seeing white flumes of smoke coming from various openings up Mount Putauaki.  Then seeing the mill shake, grounds etc, pretty scary at the time.  I remember running home and about to cross the bridge into Kawerau, when it buckled and swayed and seeing pople scatter outta their cars on the bridge.  Taking the chance to run hard out across the bridge and up to Hardie Ave, I mean Walter Nash Street to check on my family.  The worst thing was not knowing when it may strike again, and seeing the fear on my family's faces and being bloody angry at nature only because there was nothing I could do.  Kia Ora.
