Topic: National Woodskills Competition and Kawerau Woodfest

Topic type:

The Kawerau Woodskills Festival began in March 1990 in recognition of the town's historic association with forestry and the timber industry. It was rebranded the "National Woodskills Competition" in 1991 as a result of an overwhelming response from competition entrants throughout the country. Now held annually in September, the National Woodskills Competition is recognised as New Zealand's premier event for carvers and turners. In 2007, the Kawerau District Council partnered with the event organisers The National Woodskills Trust to expand the Festival to include a wide variety of elements associated with the wood industry and the bush at large. This umbrella brand was called the Kawerau Woodfest and activities involve the entire town centre area with the National Woodskills Competition remaining as the cornerstone of the event.
