At 1.30pm Saturday 13 September 2008, a parade was held for Sarah Walker, to celebrate her performance at the Beijing Olympic Games.

As part of the Kawerau Woodfest 2008, the community decided to hold a tickertape parade for Sarah Walker to celebrate her Olympic achievements. The parade began at the Kawerau BMX track in Glasgow Street and travelled around the shopping centre finishing at Prideaux Park where a stage was erected for officials and speakers including a Powhiri done by Kawerau South and Trident High School students. Sarah travelled in an open convertible led by BMX riders from her Rotorua Club all wearing Walker-96 t-shirts. Other participants in the parade also featured the Kawerau Police and Fire Brigade, the Scottish Pipe Band, Rotorua Blues Marching Team and local schoolchildren. Speakers included Mayor, Malcolm Campbell, Sarah, and Don Judkins from the Lion Foundation who presented Sue Walker with a cheque for $40,000 to upgrade the town's BMX track and construct new mountain bike tracks on Monika Lanham Reserve.
